Vegan doughnuts take over Maine
By Avery Yale Kamila
A classic Maine treat, doughnuts have gone vegan and altered the Pine Tree State’s bakery landscape. The rise of vegan doughnuts started when Holy Donut first offered a selection of vegan flavors in 2013. Then in 2019, things really heated up when the all-vegan Lovebirds Donuts opened its doors. Since then, options have multiplied. Here are some of the spots where you can find vegan doughnuts in Maine.
Lovebirds Donuts in Kittery— This all-vegan doughnut shop makes both yeast-raised and cake-style doughnuts and cooks up traditional flavors alongside an ever-changing rotation of varieties like cafe mocha and cardamon rose. Gluten-free doughnuts, too.
Holy Donut in Portland and Scarborough—The pioneer of vegan doughnuts in Maine typically makes its signature potato doughnuts in six vegan varieties every day that might include pomegranate, lemon and cinnamon sugar.
No View Farm in Rumford—A small cafe and bakery is located on this farm with guest rooms, offering vegan doughnuts in flavors such as blueberry lemon or apple cider. The best selling flavor? Orange cranberry. Dine in is temporarily closed.
Whole Grain Bakeshop in Brewer—There are plenty of vegan treats on offer inside this gluten-free bakery, including vanilla cake and chocolate glazed doughnuts, alongside vegan brownies and molasses cookies.
The Donut Grove in Bangor—With flavors such as Gram’s molasses and midnight chocolate with toasted coconut, this all-vegan bakery sells its doughnuts at the Bangor Farmers Market on Sundays and delivers pre-ordered doughnuts to the Fork & Spoon restaurant on Saturdays.
County Roots in Presque Isle—This all-vegan cafe and bakery makes doughnuts in flavors like pumpkin spice and maple glazed as well as cinnamon rolls, whoopie pies and chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting.
